Where This Work Came From
The AI safety conversation is dominated by people who came from academia or software. Almost no one in it has spent time in environments where epistemic failure has physical consequences: where a wrong document number causes a valve to be installed backwards, where a missing revision causes a structural assessment to be run against the wrong load case. This is the lineage that produced this methodology.

The Engineering Logic

Document control at industrial scale is applied epistemology. Systems must know what they know, record what they record, and refuse to assert what they cannot verify. The chain of custody is not bureaucracy: it is the mechanism by which accountability survives contact with complexity.

When generative AI arrived, the failure mode was immediately recognisable. These systems have no document control. No chain of custody. No trip state. They are the most authoritative-sounding information systems ever built, operating without the safety architecture that any offshore engineer would consider baseline.

Ontological Engineering Pty Ltd exists to apply that discipline to AI systems. The Right to Refuse methodology did not emerge from a literature review. It emerged from six years managing the engineering information on a $54 billion offshore LNG project, where the cost of epistemic failure is measured in safety incidents and regulatory liability: not benchmark scores.

Industrial Lineage: Technical Record
2000 - 2003
ITS Customer Support / Internal Account Manager
Comdek Computers / Corporate Express - Western Australia
Technical arc begins. Hardware assembly and IT support at scale. The origin of understanding systems as physical infrastructure with provenance requirements, not abstract software.
2004 - 2005
Diploma of Library and Information Services
Central TAFE - Information Science
Formal training in taxonomy, metadata, and information architecture. The discipline that would later define the Librarian Constraint: absence of knowledge prohibits assertion. Library and information science is applied epistemology. This is its direct lineage.
2004 - 2005
Library Technician
De Beers Group - Western Australia
Practicum in industrial information management. Classification, retrieval, and the ethics of information intermediation applied at operational scale.
2006 - 2007
Document Controller
Alinta Energy - Power Projects
First industrial document control role. Engineering lifecycle information management across capital power projects. The beginning of understanding information as safety infrastructure.
2007 - 2008
Document Controller: As-Built Offshore Verification
Woodside Energy - Goodwyn A / North Rankin
Offshore for the first time. Raw markups taken straight from the steel, enforced into the engineering database with zero tolerance for drift. If the logs do not match physical reality, the liability is catastrophic. This is the origin of the methodology that follows.
Asset
Goodwyn A Platform / North Rankin - Northwest Shelf, WA
Primary Function
As-built verification: physical asset vs. engineering record reconciliation
Standard Applied
Zero tolerance for epistemic drift between physical state and document record
Consequence of Failure
Safety incident / regulatory liability / structural integrity risk
2008 - 2010
Document Controller
Maersk Drilling - Denmark and Singapore
International deployments. Offshore drilling information management across jurisdictions. Enforcing data standards without the luxury of a shared regulatory environment.
2010 - 2011
Lead Document Controller
Woodside Energy - Perth
Leadership role managing information systems across major capital projects. Building the governance frameworks that survive handover.
2011 - 2013
Engineering Systems Supervisor
Amec Foster Wheeler - Bulgaria and Africa
Multinational deployments across multiple continents and regulatory environments. Engineering information systems that hold their integrity regardless of geography.
2013
Lead Facilities Engineering Document Controller
Chevron - Capital Projects
Tier-1 operator. Capital projects information management under one of the most rigorous compliance environments in Australian resources.
2013 - 2014
Capital Projects Lead Document Controller
ConocoPhillips Australia
Multinational capital projects. Engineering information standards and compliance across the full project lifecycle from FEED through handover.
2014 - 2020
Operations Engineering Information Management Coordinator
INPEX - Ichthys LNG Project
Six years on one of the largest LNG projects ever built in Australia: $54 billion. End to end - Korea fabrication yards, offshore Darwin, Bladin Point onshore facility. ROV video handovers. Incident management room governance. Main revision authority across the project. INPEX arrived with no established systems. Building them from nothing established the discipline that now applies to AI: every piece of data that flows through a consequential system requires a chain of custody. That is the standard commercial AI does not have.
Project Scale
$54 billion - Ichthys LNG: largest LNG project in Australian history at time of construction
Geographic Scope
Korea fabrication yards - Offshore Darwin (FPSO/CPF) - Bladin Point onshore facility
Authority
Main revision authority across the project. Built information systems from zero baseline on INPEX arrival.
Key Deliverables
ROV video handovers. Incident management room governance. End-to-end chain of custody across the full asset lifecycle.
Discipline Transfer to AI
Every consequential output requires a provenance record. This is the standard commercial AI does not have.
Duration
Six years: 2014 to 2020
2021 - Present
Project Delivery Consultant
InEight - Perth
The only WA-based consultant handling Tier-1 multinationals in the construction and engineering software sector. Six Sigma Black Belt. User adoption, lifecycle clarity, and process defect elimination applied to enterprise software delivery.
Sept 2025
Founder and Director of Research
Ontological Engineering Pty Ltd - ABN 77 691 088 963
The synthesis. 25 years of industrial epistemic discipline applied to AI safety. The Right to Refuse methodology, the Epistemic Control Architecture, the isolated compute node. The same discipline that kept deepwater platforms operationally sound, applied to the information systems now making consequential decisions at scale.
